DOT&PF 2020 Storm Recovery

On November 30, 2020, a week of record rainfall started in Southeast Alaska that led to widespread flooding and landslides, one of which included fatalities. By the end of the storm, DOT&PF roads in Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Hoonah, and Petersburg had sustained damage at 160 locations.

Emergency repairs were conducted at those sites to secure the roads.

Designs for long-term repairs are underway. Construction is occurring on a site-specific schedule. Construction at some sites was completed in 2022 and 2023. Other sites have construction continuing into 2024 and 2025.

Many of the damaged sites are eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Emergency Relief funding. Sites deemed ineligible for federal emergency funding will be stabilized and monitored but may not be permanently repaired.
